Spare Parts has a long serving commitment to providing artist training and development opportunities.
The Spare Parts’ Artist Training & Development programs are one of a kind in Australia. We offer unique opportunities for artists and others who are interested in puppetry to learn, connect, develop and work with acclaimed puppeteers, including Artistic Director Philip Mitchell and Associate Director Michael Barlow.
The company previously ran the FirstHand Puppetry Artist Training program since 2011, which offered fee-free positions to selected emerging artist’s to develop their puppetry skills. In 2015 we established a partnership with the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts to offer a puppetry unit to students studying a Bachelor of Performing Arts and in 2016 we extended our tertiary partnerships to also include Curtin University.
Throughout the year we offer workshops for adults of all skill levels to explore puppetry design and performance under the guidance of talented and experienced company associates. We’ve also established an In Conversation program that welcomes audiences to join a panel discussion about various themes and issues surrounding puppetry, the performing arts and the current show.
