Years 7 - 10

Western Australia children and young people in Years 7 to 10, are invited to design a poster for Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s 2021 Go for 2&5 Regional Schools Tour of our new work Beanstalk.

Beanstalk will premiere in-theatre in December 2020 for school performances and January 2021 for the general public before touring to regional WA schools in Terms 2 and 3.

Brief

Beanstalk is a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk from the point of view of the giant. Our version of this much-loved tale will delve into the world of giants, cloud farming and magical gardening. It will be a humorous story that will have you thinking about what it means to be seen in a negative light based purely on external appearances and how we can all become more accepting and compassionate towards one another!

The style of puppetry explored in Beanstalk will be Object Theatre (sometimes referred to as object puppetry) and will use found objects (fruit and vegetables) to create a story with characters. Object theatre deliberately uses everyday objects, either as is or transformed into other things, requiring the skill of the performer and the imagination of the audience for its success. In Beanstalk, the giant will be played by a performer and the other characters will be represented by fruit and vegetables with Jack as a knotted bread roll.

The poster must be portrait orientation and may be either an A4 or A3 in size. All entries must include the following:

  • Go for 2&5 and Heathway logo
  • Spare Parts Puppet Theatre logo
  • The Giant
  • Jack
  • 2 fruit and 5 vegetable characters that the giant might meet in the show. They can be humans or animals, get creative, your imagination is the limit!

All posters also need to include the following – What, When, Who, Where & How:

  • Tour name :“Join the Go for 2&5 Regional Schools Tour” (what)
  • Show name:  “Beanstalk” (what)
