Years K-2

Western Australian children from Kindergarten to Year 2 are invited to colour an A4 picture, for Spare Part Parts Puppet Theatre’s new show, Beanstalk. The colouring page is available to download on this page. Entries need to be uploaded via the online entry form by 4:00pm (AWST) 04 September 2020. Judges will select three winning entries to receive a prize pack.

Beanstalk is a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk from the point of view of the giant. Our version of this much-loved tale will delve into the world of giants, cloud farming and magical gardening. It is a humorous story that will have you seeing the world from another person’s perspective!

The style of puppetry explored in Beanstalk will be Object Theatre (sometimes referred to as object puppetry) and will use found objects (fruit and vegetables) to create a story with characters. Object theatre deliberately uses everyday objects, either as is or transformed into other things, requiring the skill of the performer and the imagination of the audience for its success. In Beanstalk, the giant will be played by a performer and Jack, by a knotted bread roll. All the other characters will be represented by a variety of fruit and vegetables.

Assessment criteria

The judges will use the following assessment matrix:

  • Does the entry use colour creatively? (weighting 30%)
  • Does the entry demonstrate effort to complete the colouring with care appropriate to
the age of the entrant? (weighting 30%)
  • Does the entry stand out amongst other entries? (weighting 40%)

Each winner will receive a Go for 2&5 prize pack and a family pass (four tickets) to be one of the first in Perth to see Beanstalk . The performance is at Spare Parts Puppet Theatre in Fremantle on Monday 11 January at 1:00pm and includes a Q&A after the show with the performer.
